Statement of Authorised Purpose
Our statement of Authorised Purposes sets out the parameters within which the Redwood Trust Incorporated can distribute available funds. This is set taking into account our trust deed and the Department of Internal Affairs prevailing licence conditions.

The Redwood Trust's authorised purposes are:

1. Donations to registered charitable organisations (such as Plunket, Red Cross and the like) and to bona fide youth and cultural organisations within the community to further the objectives of these groups.
2. Donations for educational advancement by way of grants to schools or other educational institutes for equipment or the development of better student amenities not covered by government funding. The establishment of student scholarships, bursaries or grants to assist individual students in their general education advancement or for the furthering of academic specialisation, provided such students are selected in a fair and open manner after public advertising.
3. Donations to amateur sports teams and clubs in the Marlborough area, competing in recognised leagues and tournaments. Grants only issued to sports teams and clubs which are formally established and/or legally constituted. Grants issued for actual and reasonable travel expenses for groups participating in tournaments with kindred groups, sports equipment, playing uniforms and ground hire. No grant shall be issued to any player or team competing on a professional basis. No grant shall be issued to any party which will result in commercial advantage, either directly or indirectly, to the Hotel/Tavern.

Authorised purposes must benefit the community and not result in commercial or personal gain. The following are some examples provided by the Department of Internal Affairs which are not acceptable Authorised Purposes:

Purposes which will result in a clear personal or commercial gain for any individual or organisation, for example:

• Grants for individual sports persons, unless the grant is made to, and administered by, an incorporated sporting body to which the individual is affiliated. If the individual is participating in a sports event that attracts prizes, all prizes must be forfeited to that sporting body.
• Grants to further the activities of professional sports persons
• Purchase or subsidy of Vehicles to be used for private or commercial activities or social functions.
• Vehicles for Motorsport
• Prizes for Sporting events (except Trophies, or modest non-cash prizes for use in genuine community sporting events. The Definition of 'modest' will in each case be determined by the size of the event concerned)

Overseas Travel - This is not deemed an appropriate use of funds.

The Racing Industry

• Payments other than stake money to horse or greyhound owners or trainers
• Payments to professional jockeys
• Activities or expenses in connection with the breeding of racehorses or greyhounds.
• Any payment, facility, or service that would give commercial benefit to owners, trainers, jockeys, breeders or other people in the racing industry.

Groups, events or trips which are predominantly social in nature and facilities to provide for such groups/events (unless the beneficiaries are a needy group such as underprivileged children or the elderly). This list of exclusions may include:

• Family Reunions
• Social Clubs and Sports Supporters Clubs
• Sporting Trips for Supporters or Spectators
• Costs associated with staging 'after match' functions for sporting groups.
• Provision or subsidy for costs of entertainment, food, or refreshments.
• Grants to non-affiliated sports clubs
• Equipment or apparel of a personal nature
